AN INTER-CLUB CHALLENGE
for the “WIGHT TROPHY”
You will know from our programme of “Events on the Water” that Reading Offshore Sailing Club has accepted an invitation to join Yateley Offshore Sailing Club and Guildford Coastal Cruising Club in a timed rally round the southern side of the Isle of Wight (Bembridge to Yarmouth) on Saturday 16th May. A new interclub trophy - the Wight Trophy - will be awarded to the winning yacht. At the moment approx. 20 yachts from all three clubs plan to take part.
This rally is not a race. The intention is that each participating yacht sets its own time to arrive at a number of pre-set waypoints round the Isle of Wight. Penalty points are awarded if engines are used. As a consequence of the individual setting of times the size and speed of boats does not become a determining factor in selecting the winner. The winning boat is the one that has the most accurate combined time in arriving at the waypoints. There will be one or two radio co-ordinators to monitor progress and record times.
The time trial will begin late morning on Saturday 16th May just east of the tidal gauge off St Helen's Fort. Finish at Yarmouth is programmed for late afternoon. The intended sail will be round the southern side of the Island and back to Yarmouth via the Needles Channel. Portsmouth tidal data is noted below.
Dinner and prize presentation will be at the Royal Solent Yacht Club in Yarmouth on Saturday evening.
Anyone wishing to take part will therefore probably want to make their own arrangements to berth in a Gosport based marina or at Bembridge Harbour on the evening of Friday 15th May.
Arrangements have been made for berthing at Harold Hayles Boatyard in Yarmouth Harbour.
In view of the arrangements that need to be made, I would be very grateful if you could let me know whether you intend to take part in this rally as soon as possible and preferably before Easter so that I can assist Yateley in planning numbers for berthing/catering. Therefore, please submit your details below.
A more detailed information pack with rules, waypoints etc. will be sent to participants towards the end of April.
NB: If the weather is poor the timed rally may be shortened from Bembridge to Yarmouth via the Solent. Hopefully it will not suffer the fate of last year’s race in Sept 14 when, with no wind at all, the timed rally had to be abandoned, although we still had a very pleasant social get together in Yarmouth.
Look forward to hearing from you!
