As I write this it is the first day of Spring, following a week of Summer weather in Winter. Times are definitely not normal. Also not normal is that Osprey was antifouled and polished in record time and was relaunched on the last day of winter. The sails are valeted and repaired and back on board – now where did I put all the halyards and sheets?
Don’t forget to turn your thoughts to summer sailing on Monday evening – 4 March – when Paul and Jan Hearn will presenting an illustrated talk about cruising the Kornati archipelago in Croatia.
Closer to home and in rather cooler waters our own “on the water” programme kicks off in a couple of weeks’ time with a visit to Gosport and Portsmouth- further details appear later in this Newsletter and via our new Whatsapp service. If you haven’t already signed up to the Whatsapp group please contact our Vice Commodore, Steve Giggs.
It’s time to get sailing again, so have a look at the programme that Steve and others have put together and get out on the water again. Let’s hope for another Summer like last year.
On the Water Events
Planning for 2019 Rallies is well underway with three events being organised for the first half of the year. Although the number of members owning yachts based in the south is limited our focus for these is still on the Solent area with the hope that members will want to attend either by boat or by land!
Full details will be given nearer the time but for now here are dates for your diaries:-
March 16 - 17 Gosport Rally with visit to the Submarine museum and / or Portsmouth with Dinner in the evening). Contact: Ian Farquhar.
April 27 - 28 Chichester Marina with Dinner in the evening). Contact: Steve Giggs.
May 18 - 19 Lymington with Dinner in the evening). Contact: Bernie Bellchambers.
There are three options for joining any of these rallies:-
Bring Your Own Boat. If you have access to a yacht already then you are half way there however if you want to get a group of other members or friends together then chartering is an option. If you are interested in doing this then please let me know to see how I can help.
Someone Else’s Boat. People with boats are nearly always after crew so if the idea of sailing to a rally is what appeals to you but you don’t have a boat then please let me know and I will see if we can match you up with someone who wants more crew.
By car. These rallies are as much about the social side as they are sailing so if you can’t find a boat or you simply don’t want to sail but still want some fun by the water then you would be most welcome to arrive by car. Please just let me or the organiser know so that we can plan numbers.
If you have any questions about any of these events or have suggestions to add to them please let me know. Steve Giggs firstname.lastname@example.org
PS: Don’t forget to check our WhatsApp group "ROSC - Get On the Water!"
We have regular meetings the first Monday of the month at the Upper Thames Motor & Yacht Club (UTMYC) in Sonning. If you would like more information on any aspect head to our website or if you would like to discuss any point with a committee member about our sailing club or visiting us on a Monday to say hello, click here to email Linda, our publicity officer, who will be happy to answer any questions.
ROSC was established in 1971and continues with regular meetings. You don't have to own a boat as many rallies are available by land, meals in a local hostillery are arranged with pre-meal drinks often on one of the attending boats.
