This is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers.
This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.
The course is taught over 40 hours with two exam papers. It is usually covered over 6 days well spaced to allow time for homework. These are timed to suit both students and instructor. If the class struggles with any element we will include an additional session (may not be a full day) to ensure students do not sit the exams before they are ready.
Course topics include:
The basics of seamanship
The essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
Plotting a course to steer
Weather forecasting and meteorology
Tides: tidal streams and tidal heights
Prevention of collision regulations
Construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
Emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts
Costs: As these courses are run for the club we are able to keep costs to a minimum. Students will need a Breton plotter or similar and a set of dividers but we can order these for you. Notebooks and 2B grade pencils you provide yourself. At the moment the cost for Day Skipper is £200 (which includes the RYA pack of 2 practice charts, a course handbook, exercises and syllabus a practice almanac and the recently revised electronic chart plotter CD). However, Reading Offshore Sailing Club members only pay £150. If an extra day is needed – and we try to avoid this – there is no further charge.
